The W124 Mercedes 500E was the world's most perfect sedan | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 05

Објављено 15 апр 2021
There are a lot of misconceptions about the Porsche-built W124 Mercedes 500E, and Jason explains why the 500E and E500 was NOT a Porsche sports sedan with a Mercedes badge. First off, there's not a single Porsche part on the car.

Porsche Engineering Services helped with reengineering the W124's engine compartment to fit in the 32-valve, 4-cam M119 V-8 - for both the 400E and the 500E.

But the 500E doesn't use the same V-8 as the 500SL. It needed shorter connecting rods so that it fit in the same physical space as the 4.2-liter 400E - this way only one structural variant needed to be produced.

The 400E was a response to the Lexus LS400. Why do you think it wasn't called a 420E?

Porsche also did the engineering to bolt up wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension components from the wider and heavier R129 500SL and W124 500SEL. That necessitated fender flares so wide that the 500E didn't fit down the regular W124 production line in Sindelfingen.

For both models, Porsche performed the physical modifications to Mercedes-built W124 chassis, and sent them back to Sindelfingen for paint. The 400E remained there, but because of its width, the 500E was sent back to Porsche, which assembled the 500E at a second Zuffenhausen factory.

With Bruno Sacco's revolutionary looks, aerodynamics, obsession with safety, and Mercedes build quality and engineering might, the W124 was certainly among the best (and most expensive) sedans in the world.

Still is. It's close to perfect. But it's not a Porsche Sports Sedan.

  • Holy crap, having that masterpiece of an engine fitted to a crappy 4sp auto is just...Steve Carrell in The Office level of cringe. Mercedes really needs to do a limited run of these with a 6sp manual or at least a more modern automatic. Jesus Christ

  • ahahaha, literally LOL'd from the start with that pinky finger coffee sip. well played, well played

  • My uncle got one

  • Who knew Adam Sandler was this into cars 😆

  • Cars need to look good to be "perfect", and like most Germain sedans, this Mercedes is lumpen, graceless and ugly.

  • It's over. Mercedes, Toyota, among other brands that built cars seriously have to compete with garbage. Early Saab were also excellent but the brand could not survive. A Saab 9000 Turbo 16 in today's money would be something like 90k€.

  • I used to be a valet and I got to park a 500E, once. I nearly snapped my neck when I mashed the gas, wanting to see what it could do. It can do a lot!

  • This guy has great mad info when it comes to history....guess he has a good team behind him....i just loved it

  • That’s the past. Mercedes today Suck !!!!

  • Excellent video about Mercedes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Gorgeous video and gorgeous car. This was back when a Mercedes was reliable. Sadly that is no more. If a modern Mercedes doesn't have a warranty you do not want it.

  • I used to have a 1992 300TE 4Matic, the monowiper is hands down the greatest windshield wiper design of all time. The rest of the car was pretty good too.

  • My parents had a 300E and a E320 W124 both where one of the best driving cars. Still haven't driven anything that felt as good.

  • Ugly taxi with terrible interior.

  • Just wow!

  • Yeah, you got damn right, adam sandler

  • If the Mercedes 500E is the most perfect sedan of 1970’s then are the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord the modern perfect sedan successors?

  • 👌🇵🇹

  • I could be wrong but the demographic audience for these cars were either Asian males in their 30s or just someone wealthy in their 30s and up. (not trying to say that these are stereotypes).

  • in early 90´s lexus the better looking ones was made of stolen design of several cars and i had one but at the end of 3 years sold it cheap, in the back the tail lights were corvette look-a-like in the from mercedes E or S depending if in the 70´s, 80´s .About the E-class manufactured by porshe isn´t the same as the regular w124 ,panels are diferent ,porshe was in a bad situation and mercedes helped by re-stylingt a 80´s model the w124 not only the look but the engeniering all made by Porshe, the w124 with the 250D (diesel engine) was considered in it´s last year of production the best car in the world allthough it was produced with the same engine since the second alf of the 80´s , no confusion there if you look at the porshe e-class it´s totally diferent from the regular E-class or w124 wich i own 3 with diferent finishings and engines also a coupé with a 3.0L engine 24 V ,just like the SL, where i installed the E porshe side panels on the wheels(it fails me the name in english), the S is a total diferent car i own a coupé from the S-class still called SEC engine V12, in mid 90´s they made a tinier leters to be glued saying CL500 V12 in the back pilar but tiny v12 not V12 all are reconisable cars ,1/2 similar just diferent body´s and finishings, and no fuel crisis for european cars as a V8 from mercedes at 60 miles an hour spends 7 liters at 100 km´s or 60 miles a U.S. V8 consumes 20 liters and alf the power and terminal speed ,i had 4 or 5 and refering to the mercury cougar 69 rx7 (7L) and the charger(7L) and the firebird MKII formula 400 and the boss mustang from 69 all very nice but heavy drinkers and apart from the boss and the formula 400 they didn´t have speed off course i changed them in europe and X2 the top speed, the MERC 450SE 6.3 V8 was tthe fastest car in the world and the formula 400 was for a brief period of time and the 70´s was maybe the most selling mercedes decade so it´s hilarious to see what that choosen kid with beard says, AAAAAH!AH!AH!AH!AH!, but my main car was the Alfa-Romeu 2000 GT also fast with a in-line engine dual cam shaft faster than a 7L U.S. car today they call it GTV because as all alfa´s after the model it as the veloce version in all models(some have the wrong body others the wrong dash and center console it´s a mix of the GT junior and the GT (grown up)) but in 76 i bought a real GTV it says in the body and all that this video isn´t real it came from outtaspace or are we in the TWILIGHT ZONE Rod Serling´s excelent T.V. show that at the time in my country all episodes were in black and white ,only in 1980 we had colour but i bought a colour tv with design already with wireless headphones and crystal support from a german guy who lived in my city because at 4km´s there was a NATO german airforcefield and we could see others country´s T.V. already in colour, regards and health(i have to stop drinking)i started friday after work and now i´m at work doing this (if i hadn´t no cocaine from Brazil i would be dead and not feeling like if i was at my late 40´s)bye

  • My dad has the 420E. Monster car. Thanks, dad, but I'll stick to my dinky Mazda. 😅

  • My dad said in the 80s-00s Mercedes was one of the most respected brands in our country and brands like bmw and audi were looked down upon and were really cheap.

  • every 60 seconds a minute passes.

  • It’s not because automatic

  • E34 m5 3.8 race

  • I've said it before and I say it again - take a big engine and put it in a small car, make it work and...........automotive perfection (no matter the make or the model) great video

  • Earing a American talk about full economi does not sound right

  • This videos whas like a story

  • The W126 560 SEL is the Best Sedan in the world!

  • Excellent car ..!! But I prefer the baby hummer Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 16v Cosworth, Icon and unique car 🙏🏻

  • this video definetly contributes to the 500E's used prices

  • Best auto journalist EVER. I enjoy Mr. Cammisa's presentations more, even, than Mr. Clarkson's. Only just.

  • I love mine! It is in Rose’ Pewter, which I understand is 1/37 in the World and 1/17 in US. Do you know anything about color production?

  • Loved the narration! 💪🏽

  • I like how Americans call anything under an F150 compact, I guess everything is a compact when you're a burger.

  • I'm a BMW guy and in an older car I need a manual but notwithstanding that you gotta give it up to the 400 and 500E and just such a simple, elegant body style while the S class cars got bigger and uglier. BTW Porsche also worked on the 960 Volvo engine. There's a nice little grocery getter and can be had cheaply. Poor man's Benz LOL.

  • Perfect sedan is m5 e34 or m5 e39

  • Our first car w124 230E😍❤️

  • Benz 190 E♥️

  • So just for giggles I decided to see if there were any 500Es for sale. I found a few 1992 models. The cheapest with 150k miles was $43,000. Now I'm looking at my 2004 Lexus LS430 with a 150k miles that I paid $6k out the door a year and a half ago with even more love...and a tinge of envy.

  • I totally agree, the 500E was the best car ever built. Second one was 190E 2.5-16!

  • Instantly sucked into that video. That got a like and sub for sure one of the best I have seen. Plus looks incredibly fun to drive.

  • This guy is funny

  • and Senna drove one of these on the track, faaaaaast!

  • What a video!

  • Mercedes Benz - was/is a status symbol in Nigeria. 500E/E500 were not common - E200/E300 were more widespread and had the nickname V-Boot - guessing it was due to that rear design. Lovely car - however I am a BMW man!!

  • I had a 1991 300E My god I miss that baby. Also had a 1989 300SEL. Both were amazing. "I swear they had the power to repair themselves". Tom Waits

  • Now Imagine that with a 5/6 speed manual and then it’s neck level special! ala E39 M5…

  • Thank you for posting 🙌

  • I wanna buy them all from you...let me jt check the back of my sofa🔄🏧🕳️🦧

  • LS400 > Mercedes anything

  • Awesome.

  • A bit noisy. So not quite perfect. Some might claim it’s a glorious sound/ noise but I don’t buy it. See for me the most glorious sound in the world is The Creation by Joseph Haydn, still I will go bonkers if have to listen to it hours by hours, day by day. Engine noise is substantially less musical and almost completely monotonous so it’s going to drive me bonkers faster. I assume the 400E mentioned is less noisy so it might be the best car in the world 🤔

  • The world's most perfect sedan is the Model S Plaid!

  • Worked on these cars years back. They are a super cool high performance sedan. Almost every switch is serviceable. The control units were still plug and play. If I was to own a MB of that era it would be the E 300. Much easier to work on.

  • Where is the love reaction button!!?

  • 100% not most! sorry!

  • Really well made documentary. Thanks for making and sharing!

  • C11

  • First I wamt to compliment one of my favorite hosts that worked at Motortrend. Now, on a transition that has obviously given him intellectual and artistic freedom. SOAR! Missed you on HEAD2HEAD...... Appreciate you more NOW!! Good luck papa!! Your content is GOLD!!🤔🤗😎👍

  • Ben afflek??

  • i wouldnt call it infatuation with fuel economy, rather a necessity due to fuel prices. and its still the same thing today, even tho usa prices got higher over time. 1 litre 95 is around 1,55 euro today here in germany, according to a us travel advise website, average price in the us for 95 gas is 75 eurocent. when my relatives were stationed here, the complain so hard. it was the mid 90s and they said, it 3x times as expensive to fill the car up here

  • Certainly one of MB’s best, and undoubtedly from their best period, but the best saloon ever? What about the timing chains needed from 50,000 miles? The rust? The price of parts? The fact that it didn’t even need a speed limiter? Quite impressive in its day, a tad less so now. I’d still have one, but let’s remove the rose tinted specs.😎

  • Where can I get one of these?

  • 2:29...Bro...Get those scrstchy ass jeans off the whip! 🤣

  • Absolutely loved this video... up until I saw that public roads were being used. Please be careful.

  • Citroen C5 Exclusiv, ever heard of it? ;)

  • The 70s? The W124 500E was in production 1990-1995. About 20 years off

  • The first person driving at the end was awesome. Now time to go to marketplace.

  • What’s the Mercedes that was in the movie “Double Impact” with Jean Claude Van Damne?

  • The 80s is when cars used to be real cars, European and Japanese, nothing exciting about today's cars, engineers have their hands and brains cuffed, profit is all what matters, just like what happened to boeing

  • It's certainly an incredibly impressive Autobahn Bomber. But for daily commuting in shitty American traffic, my Camry Hybrid with radar-assisted cruise control, automatic lane-centering, no gear-changes, and 50mpg in stop-and-go freeway traffic-jams, wins hands-down.

  • They really are a stunning car even today.(the 124's).. every now and then you drive past one and they are usually in immaculate condition and you go.... WoW. I think you captured it well when you said "look at all the other cars" from the 80's

  • I am appalled by myself not finding this channel sooner... Here's a subscribe..., take it!😄🤲

    • I also strongly suspect Doug DeMuro is actually a robot pretending to be human.

  • So, a late ‘70s Mercedes? That was when “Mercedes” meant something besides “overpriced junk”. 😜

    • Junk? Are you out of your damn mind?

  • Personally I thought the most perfect sedan was a Chevrolet Caprice Classic or even a Mercury Grand Marquis. You guys like expensive cars that go to the shop a lot. Engineered like no other car in the world..thank God!

  • finally someone who pronounces Porsche correctly

  • Love my daily drive 1992 300E. But the only thing that I believe one can never control; the absolute MPG, is what's hurting me the most. Best I got was ~26 US MPG and worst I got was 16 in my specific driving conditions. Yet still I plan on keeping it forever. Critical parts are still manageable with reasonable price so far even tho they keep getting less available and more expensive.

  • Good job, damn...

  • I dont if its the best sedan but its between this and the lotus carlton

  • GOAT auto journalist 💜

  • wow opel calibra had the same drag coeficient and bragged about it so much I remember it.. never heard mercedes mentioning it that times..

  • Nice production

  • Probably the coolest merc ever short of the hammer

  • Please do the Lexus LS 400/430

  • 04:17 is he trying to sit on the bonnet??

  • Great video and so interesting. I had no idea there was so much going on with this car at the time. I do remember when flushed headlights finally arrived in America. They were so cool! Still, it took the US manufacturers years to catch up with that trend and for congress to approve the innovation. You had only two choices with American cars: Round or square, that's it. To me, Europe still has a more diverse and intriguing range of cars to choose from. All we get anymore is SUVs. At least they all come with flush headlights now.

  • God is above as Mercedes below

  • He knows.

  • W124 love it

  • 🔨

  • Man, now I just gotta see the LS400 video.

  • One of my favorite episodes, and prob one of my favorite cars ever! Great Content !

  • The most perfect car is my 93 mitsubishi expo LRV,

  • This dude is a mix of Adam Sandler, Ben Affleck and and Edward Burns LOL

  • Lexus will always be better than Benz.

  • Till today....2021.... are you sure..though I like Mercedes benz

  • W124 engineering masterpiece
